She’s a real tough cookie.

Dorito is a feisty 5-month-old kitten with a big personality. She squeaks and howls instead of meowing, loves being cradled like a baby, and charms everyone she meets.

However, what truly sets her apart are her eyes — enormous, opalescent marbles that look almost otherworldly.

Despite what some commenters online believe, Dorito is very real. She’s not AI-generated, not magical, and not an alien oracle. Instead, her striking appearance has a medical explanation.

A Rare Case Of FIP

Dorito’s oversized eyes are the result of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a serious inflammatory disease in cats. While FIP itself is not uncommon, eye involvement is rare. In fact, fewer than a quarter of FIP cases affect the eyes at all — and even fewer lead to dramatic swelling like Dorito’s.

When Dorito and her sister, Cheeto, first arrived at The Bitty Kitty Brigade in Little Canada, Minnesota, their eyes looked normal. A Good Samaritan had found them behind a dumpster, both suffering from cuts on their ears and respiratory infections.

At first, both kittens improved quickly. They ate well and recovered from their colds. But then Dorito’s eyes began to swell.

An ophthalmologist examined her and confirmed the diagnosis: FIP.

A Treatment That Saved Her Life

Until recently, FIP was almost always fatal. Fortunately, treatment has been available for about eight years and only became legal in the U.S. in 2024.

Because her veterinary team acted quickly, Dorito received treatment right away. Today, she is officially disease-free.

Although she has limited vision, she’s otherwise healthy. The pressure in her eyes has returned to normal, and she now receives over-the-counter lubricant drops to keep her eyes moisturized since she can’t fully close her eyelids.

Whether her eyes will shrink back to their original size remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Dorito isn’t letting that slow her down.

A Forever Home — And A Whole Lot Of Love

During their stay at the rescue, Dorito and Cheeto completely won over their foster mom. Eventually, she made it official and adopted both sisters.

According to her new mom, Dorito is a total cuddle bug. She loves exploring, gives gentle kisses, and plays enthusiastically — but never unsheathes her claws, even during her most dramatic attacks.

Meanwhile, the internet continues to debate her “mystical” status.

“You cannot convince me this cat isn’t magic!” one commenter wrote.

And honestly? While there’s a perfectly scientific explanation for her eyes, there’s no denying Dorito has something special about her.
