An ordinary morning at PAWS Atlanta turned into a heartbreaking rescue when an animal care specialist discovered something unexpected outside the shelterโ€™s front gate.

Sitting in the early morning light was a simple Egglandโ€™s Best cardboard box. But instead of eggs, the box held something far more fragile.

A Tiny Pink Nose Peeking Out

As the staff member approached the box, they noticed a small pink nose poking through a hole on the side.

Inside were six tiny kittens, abandoned and left at the shelterโ€™s entrance.

This box wasnโ€™t full of eggs.
It was full of kittens.

Sadly, Not an Uncommon Discovery

Although the situation was upsetting, shelter staff were not entirely surprised.

PAWS Atlanta sees abandoned animals left at their gate far too often โ€” especially during kitten season.

โ€œThe โ€˜egg kittensโ€™ were only one of several groups of kittens left in boxes at PAWS Atlanta last year,โ€ said Brenna Lakeson, communications and community engagement manager. โ€œEven though itโ€™s not abnormal, itโ€™s still heartbreaking and anxiety-inducing to find abandoned animals at the shelter gate.โ€

Healthy, Just in Need of Help

Rescuers carefully removed the kittens from the box and examined them.

Fortunately, the kittens were in good health, suffering only from a few fleas, which were easily treated. They were slightly underweight, but with proper food and care, they quickly began to improve.

Thriving in Foster Homes

Soon after, the kittens were placed into foster homes, where they could receive the individual attention they needed to grow strong.

โ€œFostering makes a huge difference, especially for our youngest kittens and puppies,โ€ Lakeson explained. โ€œMany of them need round-the-clock care, much like a newborn infant.โ€

Foster families help with feeding, weaning, socialization, and emotional support โ€” giving young animals the best possible start in life.

Ready for Their Forever Families

Once the kittens reached three months old, they were spayed and neutered and officially ready for adoption.

They were given fittingly adorable names:

  • Hard Boiled
  • Sunnyside
  • Scramble
  • Omelette
  • Yolkster
  • Eggs Benedict

Before long, every single kitten found a loving home. Sunnyside and Omelette, who had formed a special bond, were even adopted together.

A Bittersweet Goodbye With a Happy Ending

For the rescuers, it was the perfect ending โ€” even if it meant letting go.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing better than receiving happy updates from adopters weeks, months, or even years later,โ€ Lakeson said. โ€œItโ€™s always hard to say goodbye, but knowing theyโ€™re loved makes it worth it.โ€

What started as a cardboard box on a cold morning ended with six kittens finding exactly what they deserved โ€” safety, love, and a family of their own. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฅš
