A tiny lost dog has made it home just in time for Christmas β€” and to a family that’s grown larger during his long absence.

Choco had been missing for five years, but his devoted owner, Patricia, never stopped believing she’d see him again.

Back in 2022, Choco vanished from his home in Antelope, California. Despite searching the neighborhood and reaching out for help, the family eventually ran out of leads and answers. Still, hope never fully faded.

Then, in November, the impossible happened. Choco was discovered more than 2,000 miles away in Detroit, chained to a fence. After being taken to the Lincoln Park Animal Shelter, staff scanned his microchip β€” and were stunned to learn he was registered to a family in California.

No one knows how Choco ended up so far from home, but the volunteer rescue group Helping Paws and Claws immediately stepped in. Determined to reunite him with his family, they coordinated his care and arranged transportation back west.

β€œThere must have been a lot of surprise when they saw where he was from,” Patricia said. β€œWhen I heard the message, I thought they meant Lincoln, California β€” not Michigan.”

Adding another layer of kindness to the story, a woman named Pamela donated her SkyMiles so Penny, a Helping Paws and Claws volunteer, could fly Choco safely home.

When Choco finally returned, five years had passed and the family had changed β€” but there was still a place just for him. His spot on the couch was waiting, along with tears, laughter, and overwhelming joy.

Patricia now has one important message for other pet parents: β€œPlease microchip your dogs. Especially during the holidays and harsh weather β€” what happened to me could happen to anyone.”
