Playtime at the Queens Zoo

The Queens Zoo shared a short and heartwarming video this week that quickly caught people’s attention. The clip shows two young Andean bears having a blast with a simple tree branch.

A zoo guest filmed the moment when the bears discovered the fallen limb and turned it into a playful see-saw. What started as curiosity quickly became a game.

Meet the Bears

The playful pair includes Coya, a female bear who is almost two years old, and Ransisku, a male who is nearly four.

Both bears are still young, which makes them eager to explore and experiment with anything new in their space.

Curious by Nature

According to Mike Allen, Director of the Queens Zoo, this kind of behavior comes naturally to them.

As young bears, Coya and Ransisku investigate everything around them. They climb, test objects, and interact with their environment in creative ways. The branch play may look silly, but it reflects how bears learn and grow.

Allen explained that moments like these help the bears understand both their habitat and each other.

A Special Bear Species

Andean bears are also known as spectacled bears because of the light-colored markings around their eyes. They are the only bear species native to South America.

Adult Andean bears usually grow between five and six feet long. They spend much of their time in trees, where they rest, forage for food, build nests—and sometimes play.

A Simple Moment, Big Smiles

Watching Coya and Ransisku enjoy such a simple object reminds people how playful and intelligent animals can be. A single tree branch turned into a source of joy, learning, and connection.

Sometimes, the smallest moments make the biggest impact 🐻🌿
