Watch the moment he hears her ๐ญ
Melo arrived at the Apple Valley Shelter in California as a supposed stray, but the team at Grandma Bettyโs Animal Rescue โ who later took him in โ couldnโt shake the feeling that something didnโt add up.
โHe was just too sweet and gorgeous. I kept thinking, โThis has to be someoneโs missing cat,โโ Lisa Johnson from the rescue told The Dodo.
Determined to find his family, Johnson created flyers, posted on PawBoost, and spent time scrolling through lost-pet reports. Eventually, she found a listing that seemed like a possible match: a cat whoโd disappeared while his owner was in the middle of moving.

โAt first I wasnโt sure,โ Johnson explained. โThe cat in the old photo looked a bit younger with shorter fur. But the post was from February, so he couldโve grown since then. The markings were spot-on, and she mentioned his bright blue eyes โ theyโre so vivid they practically glow. I just had a strong feeling.โ
Johnson contacted the woman who posted, named Serena, who was instantly hopeful. The two exchanged photos and videos, trying to confirm the match. While on the phone, Johnson put Serena on speaker โ and Melo immediately recognized the voice calling his name.

โHe definitely knew her,โ Johnson said. โHe perked up and even tried to paw at the phone.โ
With that reaction, all doubt disappeared. Melo wasnโt a stray at all โ heโd been missing from his home nearly eight hours away.
Because of the distance, the rescue arranged for Pilots N Paws โ an organization theyโd worked with before โ to fly Melo back to Sacramento. The pilots didnโt even need a crate for him.

โHeโs such a mellow, loving boy,โ Johnson said. โHe just relaxed in their arms. They let him sit on their laps during the flight and hang out under their seat while they prepared for takeoff.โ
Thanks to everyone involved, Melo is now back home with his mom, safe and loved again โ exactly where heโs meant to be.
