A routine trip across the waters of South Australia turned into an extraordinary wildlife rescue when a boat crew spotted something they never expected to see swimming in the middle of the sea.
At first, the sight seemed almost impossible.
Far from the shoreline, a lone kangaroo was struggling through the water, with no land close enough to offer an easy escape.
The exhausted animal had somehow made its way approximately 3 kilometers offshore in Boston Bay, near Port Lincoln.
Fortunately, a group of experienced divers happened to be passing through the area.
And when they realized what was happening, they knew they couldn’t leave the helpless animal behind.
What followed was an unusual rescue that ended with a remarkable moment of relief.
A Boat Captain Notices Something Unbelievable in the Water
The unexpected discovery happened in October 2026 when Jake Murray and his crewmates were traveling through Boston Bay.
The group was carrying out a routine trip when skipper Ryan Smith noticed something unusual moving in the water.
He quickly alerted the others, suggesting that he had spotted a kangaroo swimming in the bay.
At first, the crew thought he must have been mistaken.
After all, kangaroos are a familiar sight across Australia, but encountering one several kilometers from shore is something entirely different.
Curious about what their captain had seen, the crew decided to turn the boat around and investigate.
As they approached the mysterious shape, their disbelief turned into amazement.
Smith had been right.
There really was a kangaroo swimming in the open water.
The animal appeared tired and waterlogged, suggesting that it had already spent considerable time struggling to stay afloat.
With land so far away, the crew realized the situation could become dangerous if they didn’t intervene.
Without hesitation, they began preparing to bring the kangaroo aboard.
Exhausted Kangaroo Swims Toward the Rescue Boat
Fortunately, the sea was relatively calm that day, making it easier for the crew to approach the struggling animal.
Their vessel was equipped with a special sea door that could be lowered to the waterline.
This feature allowed the rescuers to get close to the kangaroo without having to lift it over the high side of the boat.
As they moved into position, the animal appeared to approach the opening.
For the crew, it was an encouraging moment.
Rather than swimming away, the kangaroo came close enough for them to reach it.
Murray carefully positioned himself near the opening and reached under the animal’s front legs.
With assistance from his crewmates, he gently lifted the exhausted kangaroo out of the water and onto the vessel.
The rescue required particular caution because kangaroos have exceptionally powerful hind legs.
Even an exhausted animal can cause serious injuries if it becomes frightened and begins kicking.
Luckily, Murray had experience working around animals.
In addition to being a diver, he is also a farmer, giving him an understanding of how to handle a frightened creature without placing unnecessary stress on it.
Once the kangaroo was safely aboard, he carefully held the animal close while keeping its strong legs under control.
And then something surprisingly touching happened.
The Kangaroo Becomes So Relaxed That He Almost Falls Asleep
After being pulled from the water, the kangaroo appeared completely worn out.
His fur was soaked, and the effort of swimming such a long distance seemed to have drained much of his energy.
Murray gently cradled the animal, providing support while the boat made its way back toward shore.
Instead of struggling to escape, the kangaroo remained remarkably calm.
As the journey continued, the exhausted animal seemed to settle into Murray’s arms.
At one point, he appeared so relaxed that he almost looked as though he had fallen asleep.
For someone accustomed to encountering animals on land, holding a tired kangaroo in the middle of the sea was an experience Murray had never imagined.
But the rescue was even more unusual for another crew member.
Miguel Villarroel, a diver originally from Ecuador’s Galรกpagos Islands, was also aboard the vessel.
Although Villarroel had spent time in Australia, he had never previously encountered a kangaroo.
Now, his very first experience with the country’s iconic marsupial involved helping rescue one from the ocean.
Naturally, he wondered whether seeing kangaroos swimming so far offshore was a common occurrence.
Murray made it clear that it wasn’t.
Even with his experience around Australian wildlife, he had never witnessed anything remotely similar.
How Did a Kangaroo End Up So Far From Land?
One question continued to puzzle everyone aboard the boat.
How had the animal ended up approximately 3 kilometers from the nearest shoreline?
Kangaroos are capable swimmers, and they sometimes enter rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.
However, finding one so far out in a large bay is highly unusual.
The crew couldn’t determine exactly what had caused the animal to venture into the open water.
Murray suggested that the calm conditions or shifting tides might have played a role.
It’s possible the kangaroo entered the water closer to shore before becoming disoriented or being carried farther away.
But without knowing what happened before the crew spotted him, the explanation remains a mystery.
Murray also found a little humor in the strange situation.
He jokingly imagined the kangaroo as a mischievous youngster who had accepted a dare from his friends and ended up in far more trouble than expected.
Of course, the real reason was unknown.
What mattered most was that the exhausted animal had been found before its circumstances became even more serious.
After a Remarkable Rescue, the Kangaroo Finally Returns to Land
With their unexpected passenger safely aboard, the crew headed toward shore.
Throughout the return journey, Murray continued supporting the kangaroo and keeping him calm.
After arriving back on land, the rescuers allowed the animal to rest on the beach.
The kangaroo didn’t immediately rush away.
Instead, he remained still for a while, apparently recovering from his exhausting experience.
The crew gave him space and watched as he gradually regained the strength to move.
Then came the moment everyone had hoped for.
The kangaroo rose and began hopping away under his own power.
After being discovered struggling in the open sea, the animal was finally back on solid ground.
Watching him leave the beach was a satisfying conclusion to an encounter that had begun with disbelief.
No one aboard the boat had expected to rescue a kangaroo that day, let alone one swimming so far from shore.
Yet their quick decision to investigate had made all the difference.
An Extraordinary Rescue the Crew Will Never Forget
While kangaroos are among Australia’s most recognizable animals, their encounters with people can still lead to remarkable surprises.
They are naturally strong swimmers, using their powerful hind legs to move through water.
However, swimming long distances can leave them exhausted, particularly when they become disoriented or struggle to find somewhere safe to exit.
Other kangaroo rescues have been reported along Australia’s coastline.
