Florida Egret’s Unusual Encounter with a Garden Snake
On a typical summer day in Florida earlier this year, a homeowner noticed a wild bird behaving strangely. Surprisingly, it wasn’t what the egret was doing that concerned him—it was what it wasn’t doing.
“An [egret] … had been standing in the same spot all day and … possibly had something in its throat,” wrote WILD Florida Rescue (WFR) on Facebook.
Reaching Out for Help
The man contacted WFR for advice. Dispatcher Alice quickly relayed the message to rescuer Heather. At the man’s request, Alice asked Heather to assess the situation and help the potentially sick bird.
After reviewing the photos, Heather suspected something entirely different.
“Heather said by the photos that she didn’t think the bird necessarily needed help,” WFR wrote. “It looked like the bird swallowed a snake and that the snake was trying to get out.”
Alice shared Heather’s theory with the homeowner and continued discussing similar unusual cases with her colleague.
Confirmation of the Odd Situation
Minutes later, the man sent an update that confirmed Heather’s suspicion.
“The gentleman just texted me that the issue resolved itself … Look at your photos!” Alice told Heather.
The new pictures showed the egret still standing in the same spot—but now a garden snake wrapped around its neck and beak.
A Safe Outcome
The snake escaped unharmed, and the egret seemed fine, though likely annoyed. The man then separated the two wild creatures safely.
Moments later, he sent another photo showing the snake indoors, while the egret stayed outside, returning to its day as if nothing had happened.
Mystery Rescue
No one knows exactly how the man removed the snake, leaving both WFR staff and social media followers stunned.
“I haven’t asked but sure am curious! Like, did he grab the bird? The snake? Did he yell ‘Drop it!’?” WFR wrote in response to a Facebook comment.
The important thing is that both animals survived.
A Comical Twist
Although the encounter seemed alarming at first, WFR hopes the Good Samaritan could laugh at the bizarre situation.
“[It] was a bit comical how it all went down,” WFR wrote.
The egret and the snake walked away safely, leaving a story wild enough to be remembered for a long time.
