โ€œAll Shelly wants to do is disappear [and] to go back to her previous life.”

In 2020, a sweet 2-year-old cat named Shelly was adopted from NAWS Humane Society, bringing joy to both the shelter staff and her new family. Everyone expected that this loving kitty had finally found her forever home โ€” and that they would never see her again.

But five years later, Shellyโ€™s family returned to the shelterโ€ฆ this time to surrender her.

โ€œUnfortunately, due to circumstances outside of Shellyโ€™s control, she came back to us,โ€ said Fran Grzesik, one of NAWS Humane Societyโ€™s directors.

Seeing Shelly again was a dรฉjร  vu moment for the staff.

โ€œShe was returned in the same adoption box she had left in,โ€ Grzesik shared.

Adjusting to Shelter Life

The first few days were tough. After living in a calm home for years, the shelter environment overwhelmed Shelly. She hid behind her litter box and avoided touch, only reluctantly burying her head when picked up.

โ€œAll Shelly wants to do is disappear and go back to her previous life โ€” a life full of love,โ€ Grzesik wrote on TikTok.

Gradually, Shelly began to trust the staff again. She allowed gentle petting and even started nuzzling against Grzesikโ€™s hand, showing her sweet and affectionate personality.

โ€œShe is extremely loving,โ€ Grzesik said. โ€œOnce she trusts you, she truly becomes attached.โ€

Finding Her Perfect Match

At seven years old, some worried Shelly might struggle to be adopted again. But her charming personality soon won hearts. Applications poured in from people eager to give her a new home, and the staff carefully reviewed each one to find the best fit.

A few weeks after her return, Shelly was adopted by Natalie, a loving new owner. Now, Shelly is thriving in her forever home, enjoying plenty of cuddles while receiving care for a minor eye condition.

โ€œIโ€™m so grateful I could help comfort her after her return,โ€ said Grzesik. โ€œNow sheโ€™s finally relaxing and enjoying her forever home.โ€

Shellyโ€™s story is a heartwarming reminder that sometimes, even after setbacks, every animal can find their happy ending.
