In late October, staff at the Humane Society of Greater Niagara in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, made a heartbreaking discovery while taking out the recycling. Near the dumpsters sat three sealed boxes and a small crate — all taped shut. Inside, rescuers found 14 frightened cats huddled together in the darkness, waiting for someone to help.
“It was a real shock for our team,” said Cortnie Welychka, the organization’s senior manager of operations, in an interview with The Dodo. “We’ve always been open 24/7 to help anyone struggling to care for their pets. To find animals left outside in the cold, sealed in boxes in our garbage area, was incredibly disheartening.”
After the initial shock, the team immediately sprang into action. One by one, they carried the boxes indoors and carefully peeled back the tape, not knowing what condition the animals might be in.
“[We didn’t know] what we were about to find,” Welychka said. “Thankfully, once we opened the boxes, we saw that none of the cats were in immediate danger.”
The staff quickly set up a warm, quiet recovery space for the group, believing the ordeal was over. But when they returned the next morning, they were stunned to find four more taped boxes near the same spot — this time containing an additional four cats.
Despite the discouragement, rescuers got right back to work.
“While it can be emotionally draining, we try to focus on the positives — these cats are now safe, cared for, and have a real chance at a better life,” Welychka said. “Supporting each other and watching the animals begin to thrive keeps us grounded in our mission.”
In the weeks that followed, the cats received veterinary care, food, and plenty of comfort. Many of the younger and more social cats have already found new homes, while others are staying with foster families until they’re ready for adoption.
The Humane Society hopes this incident reminds people that help is always available.
“For anyone struggling to look after their animals, please know there’s no judgment,” Welychka said. “Life can change so quickly, and sometimes people just need a bit of support. Reaching out early can make all the difference for both you and your pets.”
What began as a heartbreaking scene outside a recycling area has turned into a story of compassion and second chances. Thanks to the quick response and kindness of the Humane Society team, 18 cats are now safe — and on their way to happier, brighter lives.
