“[S]he was looking back and forth, hoping they’d come back …”
With Halloween just around the corner, spooky decorations have been popping up all around Whittier, California. But one family living in a quiet part of town received the shock of their lives the other day when they looked outside and discovered a living, breathing statue in their yard — one they’d never seen before.
It was around breakfast time when the family realized that a curly black-and-white dog had wandered onto their patio and planted herself on the landing. Her face was unfamiliar, but the amount of time she spent on the porch made it seem as though she’d been there many times before.
“[She] showed up at 10 a.m. — right at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac — and [she] waited,” Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, wrote on Facebook. “All day long. [She] went from the front porch to the side porch, just waiting.”

The dog stayed on the porch for hours with her eyes fixated on the road. Her overgrown hair and dusty paws suggested she’d been on her own for a long time, but something about her demeanor made the homeowners feel like she once had a family.
“[It was] almost like [she] was looking back and forth, hoping they’d come back for [her],” Hall wrote. “[She was] matted, dirty and trembling.”

Sadly, the poor pup’s wish never came true. No one came looking for her, and even after being offered food and water, she refused to let anyone near.
The family tried tirelessly to win her over, but she wouldn’t budge. Then Hall eventually arrived, and she refused to leave the neighborhood without her.

As soon as she got there, Hall set a humane dog trap with enticing food. While not every dog she’s rescued has taken the bait right away, this sweet girl wasted no time getting to the delicious treat.
“The moment I set the trap, [she] went right in. [She] was just that hungry,” Hall wrote.

Hall breathed a sigh of relief when the dog walked into the trap.
The rescuer drove the pup, whom she named Maya, to the vet, where she received a thorough checkup and a much-needed makeover.

After having her long, curly hair shaved away, Maya enjoyed a soothing bath, then settled into her kennel for some rest.

It’s been a few days since Maya’s rescue, and she is feeling better than ever. Still, the best is yet to come for the sweet girl, as she continues her hunt for a loving family.
Hall is confident that Maya will find her perfect home soon. Until then, Maya’s caregivers will continue showering her with the love she’s always deserved, grateful that she’s no longer on the streets.
“[T]tonight, this sweet baby is safe,” Hall wrote. “Safe, safe, safe …”
