One morning in Canada, a homeowner stepping outside for the day was startled to find an unexpected guest hanging β quite literally β from their front porch ceiling.
The surprise visitor wasnβt perched on the porch, but rather stuck halfway through it. At some point during the night, a curious raccoon exploring the homeβs attic had tried to make a quick exit. Spotting an opening where a light fixture had been, he attempted to squeeze his pudgy body through the small gap β only to become hopelessly wedged in place.
By the time morning came, the raccoon was dangling awkwardly from the ceiling, unable to pull himself free.
βThe homeowner found him there and called us,β said Max McVety of Forest City Wildlife Control in an interview with The Dodo. βHe was just hanging there β raccoons are usually pretty good at squeezing through tight spaces, but he didnβt have anything to grab onto to push himself out.β
When McVety arrived, he set up a ladder beneath the trapped raccoon and offered him a rope to hold onto. With a gentle tug and a bit of teamwork, the raccoon managed to wriggle his way through the opening and climb down to safety. Moments later, he hopped to the ground and scurried off, no worse for wear.

Unlike most wildlife rescues that require direct handling or catch poles β both stressful for the animal β this operation relied purely on patience and problem-solving.
βIt worked out really well,β McVety said. βHe just needed a little help.β
After the incident, the homeowner sealed off the attic entrance to prevent future furry visitors from making similar escape attempts. Still, the rescue left quite an impression on McVety.
βWe see all kinds of strange situations,β he said. βBut this one was definitely unique β not your everyday rescue.β
