A few weeks back, a group of employees from Point Guard Management stopped by one of their rental homes in Wichita, Kansas. The tenants had recently moved out, and the team planned to begin some renovations on the empty property.

But before they could even step inside, they noticed a heartbreaking note taped to the front door. Written by a concerned neighbor, the message revealed that the previous residents had left behind their cat — along with her newborn kittens.

Upon reading the note, Patricia Mitnaul, Point Guard Management’s social media and content creator, immediately started searching the area. Within minutes, the mother cat appeared, walking straight toward her as if relieved to see a friendly face.

“This cat is unbelievably sweet,” Mitnaul shared on Instagram. “She follows me everywhere — I can’t take a step without her weaving between my legs.”

Touched by the cat’s affectionate nature, Mitnaul affectionately named her Sissy. As Sissy stayed close by, Mitnaul began searching for the kittens but couldn’t find any sign of them. She offered Sissy food and water, which the cat eagerly accepted, but Mitnaul knew she couldn’t leave without locating the babies.

Soon after, someone spotted the kittens hiding near a small cutout at the base of the house that led into the crawl space. Mitnaul quickly contacted the Wichita Animal Action League (WAAL) for help.

Together, the rescue team — made up of WAAL members and Point Guard Management staff — managed to capture one kitten in the garage. The remaining two, however, darted into the crawl space beneath the home. Kirsten, one of Mitnaul’s coworkers, volunteered to crawl under the house to retrieve them but came up empty-handed. Finally, the rescuers managed to lure the kittens out with some tasty food.

Once all the kittens were safe, WAAL rushed the feline family to the veterinarian — just in time. The exam revealed that Sissy and her kittens were suffering from a severe case of roundworms. With prompt treatment, they all recovered.

“Mom was in bad shape and probably wouldn’t have made it without help,” Mitnaul told The Dodo.

Now, the little family is resting comfortably at WAAL’s rescue center. They’re growing quickly and getting stronger each day.

“They’re almost at two pounds now — one’s a bit smaller, but catching up,” Mitnaul said. “Overall, they’re doing great.”

In a heartwarming twist, Kirsten — one of the rescuers — plans to adopt at least one of the kittens. The rest will be available for adoption through WAAL once they’re healthy, weaned, and ready for new homes.

Thanks to the kindness of Mitnaul, Kirsten, and the WAAL team, Sissy and her babies have been given a fresh start and a chance at a better life.
