“[S]he was just a little too much for them.”
Lucky Charm, a bouncy 5-month-old pup, has been calling the Benton-Franklin Humane Society home since early July. In that short time, she’s managed to win over every staff member and volunteer with her boundless energy and joyful personality.
“She’s a total toy fanatic,” volunteer Julie Saraceno told The Dodo. “Super playful, always ready for fun.”
But despite her charm, Lucky has had a harder time finding her forever family. For a puppy, even a couple of months in a shelter feels like forever — and watching her spend so much time in a kennel has been tough on those who care for her.

“Puppies are such high-energy, and being stuck in one place all day is especially hard for them,” Saraceno said.
Wanting to give her a taste of the outside world, Saraceno recently whisked Lucky away for a mini adventure. The pup soaked up every second — from the car ride to her very first pup cup, which she devoured with pure delight.
“She loved it,” Saraceno said with a smile. “I don’t think she’d ever had one before.”
Not long after, a family visited the shelter and fell for Lucky’s sweet face. They decided to adopt her, and she bolted joyfully toward the doors, excited to begin her new life.
“I was thrilled for her,” Saraceno said. “She finally had a family of her own.”
Unfortunately, the excitement didn’t last. Just a week later, Lucky was brought back. Her adopters realized she was a little more energetic than they could handle.
“It broke my heart to see her returned,” Saraceno admitted. “But at least she got some time outside the kennel, even if it was short-lived.”
Now, Lucky is once again waiting for the right person — someone who understands high-energy dogs and can give her the structure, training, and love she craves.
“She adores people, she loves other dogs,” Saraceno said. “With the right guidance, she’s going to be the perfect companion.”
