“I felt so sad for her.”

For more than a week, a thin and frightened black dog was seen wandering the streets of Youngstown, Ohio. Believed to have been abandoned, the dog was very cautious of people and avoided anyone who tried to help her.

Megan Zarlenga from the Mahoning County Dog Warden said the dog was clearly in poor condition and limping. Deputy Keith Stokes had recognised her after several days of trying to catch her, but each attempt failed as the dog would not allow anyone to get close.

On Wednesday, Deputy Stokes and police officer Megan Feidler finally managed to locate the dog again. However, she was still extremely scared and unsure of her surroundings. Instead of approaching too quickly, Officer Feidler chose a calm and gentle approach to gain the dog’s trust.

Feidler sat down on the ground to show the dog she was not a threat. She spoke softly and waited patiently. After some time, the dog lay down beside her, allowing Feidler to comfort and gently pet her. This quiet moment helped reassure the dog that she was finally safe.

Eventually, Feidler was able to place a leash on the dog and guide her into a van. Once inside, the dog quickly fell asleep, exhausted after days of stress and fear.

The dog was taken into the care of Friends of Fido Animal Rescue, where volunteers discovered she had a broken hip. She is now receiving treatment and recovering well. The rescue team named her Maeve.

Although her past remains unknown, those caring for Maeve believe she has a hopeful future ahead. Many people have shown support for her recovery and rehoming. Online, Officer Feidler has been praised as an “angel” for her patience and compassion.

Feidler said she was simply relieved to know Maeve would now receive the medical care she needed and eventually find a loving home where she would be safe and cared for unconditionally.
