In the very last kennel at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, a gray-and-white dog named Bernie gazes out at visitors every day, hoping that someone will notice him. For months now, Bernie has waited—patiently, day after day.
“I’m a big, handsome, friendly boy,” says a video by Pawfect Pals NY Need a Home about Bernie. “I’ve been here almost six months, and not one person has asked to meet me.”

The shelter staff can’t understand why Bernie hasn’t received any interest.
“It’s very disheartening,” said Ashley Behrens, acting director of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. “He is such a hidden gem, and someone is completely missing out on him.”

It’s possible that Bernie’s size and energy level might be off-putting for some potential adopters. But those who’ve spent time with him know that these traits are exactly what make him so special.
“He’s a blast to walk and hang out with in the yard,” Behrens said. “He loves to play, chew on hard toys, and enjoys running around to burn off some energy.”

When Bernie first arrived at the shelter, he was emaciated and weak, just skin and bones. But after weeks of care and attention, he began to flourish. He gained weight, adjusted to a life full of love, and learned to be a well-behaved pup.
“He’s now much more engaged, relaxed, and walks beautifully on a leash,” Behrens said. “He’s fully housebroken and very calm in his kennel.”
Because of his size and excitable nature, shelter staff believe that Bernie would do best in a home with older teens and adults. His ideal family would be enthusiastic about continuing to teach him manners and ensuring that he gets the exercise he needs to stay happy and healthy.
For now, Bernie will keep waiting, hoping that one day, the right person will come to the very last kennel and realize they’ve found the perfect companion.
