Two Baby Reindeer Born at Dudley Zoo

Exciting news from the Black Countryβ€”Dudley Zoo and Castle has announced the arrival of two adorable new additions to their reindeer family!

In a joyful Facebook post shared on Monday, the zoo revealed that two of their reindeer mums, Sunflower and Jasmine, recently gave birth. Sunflower welcomed a healthy baby boy, while Jasmine brought a little girl into the world. Both calves and their mothers are doing well and settling in comfortably with the rest of the herd.

While reindeer are not currently classified as endangered, they are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, meaning conservation efforts are important to their long-term survival.

Reindeer Facts You Might Not Know:

  • They can reach running speeds of up to 75 km/h.
  • Reindeer are the only mammals known to see ultraviolet light, an adaptation that helps them navigate the snowy landscapes of their natural habitat.
  • In Europe, they’re called reindeer, but across North America, they go by the name caribou.
