Tribute to Kubu, the “Truly Remarkable” Sumatran Tiger

A tiger who was euthanized due to an “untreatable spinal condition” has been remembered as “truly remarkable” by the team at Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

Kubu, a 13-year-old Sumatran tiger, passed away on Monday after a period of veterinary care for age-related mobility issues. Further examination revealed he had a prolapsed disc and a nerve root tumour. Despite the tireless efforts of the keepers and veterinary team to manage his condition and ensure his comfort, the decision was made to let Kubu pass peacefully and with dignity.

Thrigby Hall, home to a variety of animals including snow leopards and Amur leopards, described Kubu as having a “striking presence” and a “calm, regal personality” that endeared him to all who met him. Born at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Ashford, Kent, Kubu arrived at Thrigby in 2013 when he was just two years old.

“He captured the hearts of everyone who met him,” the zoo shared in a tribute. “His gentle yet commanding demeanor made him a favorite among visitors, and his bond with the keepers was special, grounded in deep respect and admiration.”

Kubu was not only a beloved resident but also served as an ambassador for his endangered species. His legacy will live on at Thrigby Hall, which plans to bring in a young male tiger by summer, followed by a female later in the year. Additionally, the zoo has worked to expand and modernize the tiger enclosure to support successful breeding and conservation efforts.

The zoo also commemorated Kubu’s powerful presence: “Though his roars will no longer echo through the gardens, his memory will endure through the impact he made on our visitors and Thrigby Hall’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation.”
