“I hate when I miss Emmy.”
Everyone has that one friend they could spend all day with and never get bored. For Emmy, a yellow Labrador retriever, that friend is Linda Rose, the kind neighbor she can’t go a day without seeing.
Emmy and Linda Rose became next-door neighbors in early 2024, and from the very first meeting, the bond was instant. Emmy’s dad, Russell Fenton, quickly realized that Linda Rose would become a cherished part of his dog’s life—but he never expected Emmy to become absolutely obsessed with visiting her.
“Emmy has been visiting Linda Rose every single day since January of 2024,” Fenton told The Dodo.
At first, Emmy would sneak over to Linda Rose’s house, sometimes arriving when the neighbor wasn’t home. Each time Emmy returned disappointed, she learned the phrase “she’s not home,” and her adorable expressions clearly showed she understood.
To make sure she never missed a visit, Linda Rose upgraded her doorbell to a dog-friendly model. Now, Emmy can announce her arrival herself:
“[Emmy] will sprint through the house, across the yard, across Linda Rose’s yard, and she will go to her front door, and she will press a nose-height doorbell with her nose until Linda Rose answers the door,” Fenton said.
Sometimes Emmy even presses the doorbell multiple times if she feels her friend is taking too long. She’ll wait patiently on the porch, softly nudging the button with her nose and light paws, until the door opens.
The moment Emmy sees Linda Rose, her tail goes into a frenzy, and she bursts inside with pure joy. Her dad patiently waits outside while the two friends play, laugh, and spend hours together.
“They play with her. They buy toys for her. And she just loves being in there so much that when it’s time to come back, it takes both Linda Rose and her husband, Mark, to lure Emmy outside with treats to come back to see me,” Fenton said.
Though Emmy loves everyone in her neighborhood, no one is as special to her as Linda Rose. And the sweet neighbor feels just as honored to be chosen by Emmy.
“Emmy is such a sweetheart, and I’m so proud she chose me to be her best friend,” Linda Rose told The Dodo. “I absolutely love seeing Emmy every day.”
