Someone was waiting inside 💔
When Lilia Toscano spotted a sealed plastic tote abandoned by the roadside near her Detroit home, a sense of unease washed over her. Something felt off.

Curious and concerned, she stepped outside, unfastened the lid—and was met with a heartbreaking sight. A small, trembling dog lay curled inside, his body rigid with fear.
Realizing the pup needed immediate help, Toscano called a neighbor, who quickly brought him indoors and reached out to P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue. The dog, later named Kendrick, remained completely motionless, leaving everyone to wonder—was he physically injured, or simply paralyzed by terror?

A P.O.E.T. board member arrived and rushed Kendrick to the vet. X-rays confirmed he had no physical injuries, but emotionally, he was shut down. Only when a kindhearted vet tech softly spoke to him did Kendrick show a tiny flicker of trust.

Wanting to give him a safe space to heal, board member Lauren Boesen volunteered to foster him. When she arrived at the clinic, Kendrick was still withdrawn, cautiously observing her from a corner.
“I sat on the floor and spoke to him in a gentle, playful voice,” Boesen told The Dodo. “Then I saw it—just the slightest tail wag.”
That small moment changed everything. As if sensing her kindness, Kendrick allowed her to place a collar around his neck. Then, to her surprise, he jumped right into the car—curiously gazing out the window for the first time in what seemed like forever.
Once home, it became clear that Kendrick didn’t know how to be a dog. Toys confused him. Affection made him uneasy. Kisses were a foreign concept. He needed time—so Boesen gave him exactly that.
Gradually, Kendrick began to transform.
“In the past few weeks, he’s grown to love cuddles,” Boesen said. “Now, he runs freely in the yard, lets me pick him up, and absolutely adores playing in the snow.”
Kendrick is still learning to trust, still discovering what it means to be safe and loved. But thanks to the kindness of strangers, he finally has a future filled with warmth, joy—and the promise of a forever home.
