“They don’t normally behave like that …”

Back in 2024, a routine grocery run turned into a life-changing moment for a woman named Rachel.

While shopping with her partner, Rachel spotted something unusual — a tiny gray-brown fuzzball darting around her feet.

“It’s a baby!” she exclaimed in a video captured at the time.

The unexpected shopper was a baby mouse, likely drawn to the store in search of food and shelter. But it was immediately clear to Rachel that the little mouse was struggling.

“[He] didn’t run, even when my finger was right next to him,” she said in a video for The Dodo. “Mice don’t normally behave like that. They usually run from people.”

Rachel, an animal lover at heart, knew what she had to do.

“I decided that we needed to save this mouse,” she said.

She and her partner brought him home, determined to give him not just safety, but a life full of enrichment.

“We wanted him to have a really enriching experience,” Rachel explained. “Lots of opportunities to do mouse things.”

They named him Mosctaccioli.

Now, Mosctaccioli is thriving — double the size he was when Rachel rescued him from the grocery store floor, and living his best life with the family that took him in.

“He’s healthy as can be,” Rachel said. “He’s really happy.”
