“She came up and asked me to pet her.”
A few years ago, a woman named Mathilda was at a local lake when something unusual caught her eye: a ball of fur rolling in the dirt. Curious, she approached and quickly realized that the ball of fur was, in fact, a rabbit. What struck Mathilda was how the bunny seemed to be seeking out human interaction.
“She came up and asked me to pet her,” Mathilda recalled in a video for The Dodo.
The rabbit’s comfort around people led Mathilda to believe that this was a domesticated pet, likely abandoned in the wild. Concerned for the bunny’s safety, Mathilda scooped her up and brought her home, eager to provide her with a safer and more comfortable environment.
Once indoors, the bunny immediately began munching on carrots and lettuce, revealing just how hungry she was. “We could tell she was really hungry,” Mathilda said, heartwarming with compassion for the little animal.
Mathilda took the bunny to the vet, where it was confirmed that the rabbit didn’t have a microchip. Without any way of tracking her origins, Mathilda decided to name the rabbit Bun Bun and give her a forever home.
However, soon after bringing Bun Bun home, Mathilda noticed some strange behaviors. “She started ripping out fabric, nesting a lot, gaining a lot of weight,” Mathilda observed. Initially, Mathilda thought she might have been overfeeding the bunny, but she was about to discover a surprising truth.
One day, Mathilda was in for a big surprise. “The next thing I knew, I just saw three little feet popping up from underneath her belly,” she said. Bun Bun had been pregnant all along, and now she was a mother to three adorable baby rabbits.
“I felt so proud,” Mathilda shared. “I was really happy just looking at them.”
Mathilda watched with joy as the babies grew from tiny pink blobs to fluffy, lively micro-rabbits, each developing their own distinct personalities. As the little bunnies grew, Mathilda found herself falling in love with them more and more.
Today, Bun Bun and her three babies are living happily with Mathilda. Though having four rabbits was more than she initially bargained for, Mathilda wouldn’t change a thing. “Having these bunnies in my life has made me want to foster more rescue bunnies in the future,” she said. “And even start a rescue.”
It’s clear that the bonds Mathilda shares with her furry companions have only grown stronger with time, and her love for them has sparked a passion for animal rescue that she’s eager to pursue further.
