A Desperate Search for a Stray in Need
When Laurie Sanchez-Guzman learned about a stray dog living in a muddy ditch and wandering the streets, she didnโt hesitate. A dedicated rescuer with D & A Animal Rescue, she knew the little pup needed help. Despite others trying to catch the dog, Sanchez-Guzman was determined to succeed. When she finally found the dog, later named Valentina, the sight broke her heart.
Valentina was covered in mud, her fur matted and tangled, and she appeared to be suffering from eye and ear infections. Though she needed help urgently, fear kept her from approaching anyone.
Gaining Valentina’s Trust
Sanchez-Guzman spent hours attempting to earn Valentinaโs trust. She offered food from a distance and spoke softly to comfort her, knowing patience was key. However, time was against them. A storm was brewing, and Sanchez-Guzman had to pick up her child from school.
โI was running out of time,โ she said. โValentina was eating near me, so I gently grabbed her by the back fur and quickly got her into a crate.โ
Initially, Valentina was upset. Once home, she refused to let anyone near her, staying withdrawn and fearful. But after a few days, Valentina realized she was safe, and the bond between her and Sanchez-Guzman began to grow.
A New Beginning
After a trip to the vet and a much-needed grooming session, Valentina looked like a brand-new dog. Slowly, her true personality began to emerge.
โShe was tough,โ Sanchez-Guzman recalled. โShe was made of pure muscle, and it was a challenge to care for her in a home full of other foster dogs. But once she got into a routine, she became happy, especially with one-on-one attention.โ
Finding the Perfect Home
For about a year, Sanchez-Guzman fostered Valentina while searching for the right forever home. Many people showed interest in adopting the feisty little dog, but finding the perfect match wasnโt easy.
โWe declined many applications because Valentina needed someone who understood that she was a warrior in a small, cute body,โ Sanchez-Guzman said.
Finally, the right family came along. Though the transition was bumpy at first, they worked hard to meet Valentinaโs needs. Now, sheโs thriving in her new home, still full of spirit, and her family loves her for it. Theyโre committed to ensuring she only knows love and peace for the rest of her life.
