“[S]he won’t budge!”
One evening last month, Mir returned home from her internship around 6:30 p.m. and noticed something unexpected waiting for her — a pigeon sitting quietly on her doormat. Unsure what to do, she snapped a photo and sent it to her mom, hoping for some guidance. The reply she received only deepened the mystery.
“She said, ‘What? That pigeon is still there? She’s been sitting in that exact spot since 4 p.m.,’” Mir told The Dodo.

At first, Mir wasn’t too alarmed. She assumed the bird might simply be resting after a long flight. Curious, she gently approached the pigeon and politely asked if she could enter her home.
“I know it sounds silly,” Mir said, “but she blinked at me and shuffled over just enough to let me pass.”
Later that night, however, things took a concerning turn. When Mir’s brother tried to leave the house, he called out to her.
“He said, ‘Mir, there’s a bird outside — and she won’t move,’” she recalled.

From inside, Mir watched as the pigeon calmly stepped aside again, unfazed. That was when her concern turned into panic.
“It was freezing outside, and she just didn’t seem right,” Mir said. “I’m not a bird expert, but my gut told me something was wrong.”
When her brother returned, Mir immediately enlisted his help. Armed with a towel, the siblings carefully picked up the gentle bird and brought her inside. Though Mir had never seen the pigeon before, she felt an instant bond.
“She looked straight at me with her red eyes and blinked,” Mir said. “It felt like she was saying thank you.”

While examining her, they noticed two small metal bands on the bird’s legs. After some research, Mir’s brother discovered the pigeon was a racing bird that had traveled roughly 130 kilometers (about 81 miles) from another city. When they contacted the registered owner, they were told the bird was no longer wanted.
Knowing the pigeon wouldn’t be safe if returned, Mir made a life-changing decision.

“I couldn’t let her go back,” Mir said. “I was already completely attached. I knew I had to keep her safe.”
She named her new companion Pidgeotto and quickly set out to give her everything she needed — proper food, clean water, warmth and care. Within days, the once-exhausted bird began to regain her strength.

“After surviving on trash and scraps while lost, she finally had real seeds, a safe place and someone who would do anything for her happiness,” Mir said.
But the rescue helped Mir, too. In the weeks before meeting Pidgeotto, she’d been struggling emotionally. Caring for the bird gave her comfort and a renewed sense of purpose.

“Hearing her coo, watching her spread her wings, seeing her relax when I sing to her — I realized I couldn’t ask for a better companion,” Mir said.

A month after Pidgeotto first appeared on her doorstep, the pair have grown inseparable. What began as a strange encounter has turned into a deeply meaningful bond.
“She changed my life,” Mir said. “She gives me a reason to get up, to care for someone — and myself. Every small improvement fills me with happiness. I never expected to find a best friend that day, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.”
