A Disturbing Discovery
Returning home from a 12-day trip, a Long Island homeowner was met with distressing sounds that caught her attention immediately. “She was greeted with the horrifying sounds of a kitten in distress,” wrote animal rescuer John Debacker in a Facebook post. Unsure of the source of the noise, she reached out for help.
A Race Against Time
Animal rescuers John Debacker and Deb Oliver swiftly arrived at the scene, determined to bring the kitten to safety. Upon investigation, they discovered that the cries were emanating from inside the fireplace. The kitten had fallen 15 feet from the top of the fireplace opening and landed behind a cement wall, where it had been waiting for days.
The Rescue Operation
Using hammers and crowbars, Debacker and Oliver worked to create an opening in the wall. Their efforts eventually revealed a desperate, fluffy face peeking through the debris. Without hesitation, Debacker pulled the kitten out by the scruff of her neck and into the safety of the light.
A Sweet Surprise
Despite her traumatic experience, the kitten remained remarkably sweet and affectionate. “The kitten turned out to be very sweet and affectionate,” Debacker shared. Once rescued, she eagerly devoured cat food, showing her relief and gratitude.
A New Beginning
The kitten was soon transferred to Catpurrccinos Cat Rescue, where she quickly formed a bond with another kitten of her age. Reflecting on the successful rescue, Debacker affirmed his commitment to seeing such missions through to the end. “I don’t leave rescues unfinished,” he said. “I knew she was coming home that night.”
