The look on his face says it all
Hercules, a wildlife patrol dog at West Virginia International Yeager Airport, already enjoys one of the coolest jobs around — charging down the runway to help keep birds away from aircraft. But during a recent shift, his workday turned into an unforgettable celebration.
The day began like any other. Hercules had breakfast with his canine brother, Ned, and their handler, Chris, before heading off to the airport for work. Once there, the two dogs spent the morning doing their usual runway patrol and hanging out with their favorite human.
But when the shift wrapped up, Hercules discovered that this was no ordinary day.
Back at the terminal, a large crowd was waiting to surprise him for his ninth birthday. The sight of so many happy faces was enough to get his tail wagging, but the celebration had only just begun.
Soon, Hercules was dressed for the occasion in a festive collar decorated with colorful pom-poms and topped off with a bright feathered birthday hat. Then everyone gathered around and sang “Happy Birthday” to him.
He was clearly loving every second of the attention.
And then came one of the biggest surprises of all. While boarding a plane — something Hercules often does as part of helping nervous passengers feel more relaxed — he received a special announcement from the flight crew.
A flight attendant introduced him to everyone on board as a very special guest and let passengers know it was his birthday. Hercules seemed to soak up the moment, pausing with a look that showed he knew this day was all about him before greeting the travelers.
Back at the gate, people celebrated with donuts while Hercules got a special treat of his own. From the joy on his face, it was obvious he was having the time of his life.
According to airport staff, Hercules has a real gift for recognizing when he is the center of attention, and he fully embraces it. He is known as a sweet, affectionate dog who adores getting love and pets from passengers.
Although Hercules has enjoyed birthday celebrations before, this one stood out as extra special. What started as an ordinary work shift became a full airport party for one very deserving dog.
Staff at the airport say Hercules is loved not only by travelers but also by TSA officers, operations crews, grounds staff, and just about everyone else who meets him. Wherever he goes, he seems to make people smile and feel a little more at ease.
