β€œThey were clearly very young and fragile.”

Earlier this month, animal rescue volunteers in Portal, Georgia, were visiting a feral cat colony when they noticed a strange sound coming from a nearby dumpster.

At first, the noise was faint, but as they listened closer, they realized it sounded like scratching. When the volunteers looked inside the dumpster, they discovered a box trapped underneath an old discarded grill.

They carefully pulled the box out and opened it. Inside were four tiny kittens, only about a week old, fighting to stay alive.

The rescuers quickly secured the fragile babies and brought them to the Humane Society of Statesboro and Bulloch County for urgent care. Staff members placed the kittens somewhere warm and safe, then checked them over.

The kittens were overheated and dehydrated, likely because they had been shut inside the box while it sat in the sun. They were extremely young and delicate, so the team knew they would need constant attention.

Staff and volunteers began caring for them around the clock. They helped the kittens learn how to drink from a bottle and fed them every two to three hours.

Caring for kittens this young takes a lot of work. Their temperature has to be monitored, they need help going to the bathroom, and they must be kept clean while rescuers watch carefully for any signs that their health is getting worse.

After a week of dedicated care, the kittens were eating well and growing stronger. The rescue team named them Waffle, Sweet Potato, Shoestring and Curly.

For now, all four kittens are staying at the shelter until they are old enough and healthy enough to be adopted.

The rescue team is thankful the volunteers were in the right place at the right time. If no one had heard the tiny scratching sounds, or if the kittens had been discovered later, things could have ended very differently.

Their story is also a reminder of how important it is to stay alert, support local shelters and take action when something seems wrong.
