“Seemingly, our wall has transformed into a feline dispensary.” Discovering a lone cat within your wall is surprising; stumbling upon five cats is downright astonishing. Yet, that was the remarkable experience for Shana Levenson, a self-professed ‘dog person’ who unexpectedly gained five new furry companions.
A few weeks ago, peculiar scratching noises emanated from the ceilings and walls of Levenson’s home. Initially uncertain about the intruder’s identity, the mystery deepened when faint meows joined the chorus.
“I never would have guessed it was a cat — never,” Levenson shared with The Dodo.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, especially with New Mexico’s summer temperatures climbing, Levenson promptly sought assistance. Her neighbor expertly cut a hole in the wall, enabling a frightened kitten to escape.
Out popped a 5-week-old gray kitten, a moment of serendipity. Despite Levenson’s initial reluctance (being a newcomer to cat ownership), her son’s persistent wish for a feline companion and the kitten’s adorable presence melted her heart. They named her Ash, inspired by her silky gray fur.
“It’s like the universe decided we needed a kitten,” mused Levenson.
The twist of fate didn’t end there. More cat noises emerged from the walls and ceiling, prompting a playful investigation. Employing recorded meows as bait, they successfully coaxed out three additional kittens.
“Apparently, our wall has turned into a kitty vending machine,” Levenson quipped on TikTok.
Even after rescuing four kittens, there was one more to save — the mother cat. Initially hesitant, she eventually succumbed to a humane trap.
“I’m just so relieved we got them all out,” Levenson expressed.
The mystery of their unexpected residency was unveiled through footage from Levenson’s Ring camera. Weeks prior, the mother cat had leaped from a backyard tree onto the roof, slipped through a vent, and birthed her litter within the ceiling.
Now, all five felines are safe and secure. Ash has found her forever home with Levenson’s family, another kitten now resides with a friend, and the remaining three are awaiting adoption at a shelter, destined to find loving families soon.
