“[H]e was the friendly ghost hiding in the walls …”
A small puppy, likely under a year old, gazed up at them from his cramped hiding spot between two concrete slabs. Although the pup could wriggle free on his own, the gap was too narrow for any human to access.
Frightened, the little dog retreated further into the crevice to avoid the concerned neighbors. In an effort to coax him out, they left food nearby, hoping to entice him. However, as soon as they departed, the puppy emerged to eat the food before swiftly darting to another equally inaccessible hiding spot.
After several unsuccessful attempts over a few days, the neighbors reached out to Suzette Hall, founder of Loganβs Legacy 29, for assistance.
When Hall and her team of volunteers arrived, they were stunned by the narrow gap between the walls and perplexed at how the tiny pup managed to squeeze in. βIt was incredibly difficult to even reach him,β Hall shared on Facebook. βThe space was just so small.β
Hall attempted to use every high-value treat she could think of to coax the puppy out, but he remained elusive while people were present. The pup only ventured out to eat the treats when the rescuers concealed themselves in a nearby bush.
βHe would come out while we were hidden,β Hall recounted. βHeβd munch on everything around the trap but refused to enter it. Weβd then rush back to the wall to keep an eye on him.β
The rescuers decided to abandon the food lure strategy and opted to guide the puppy closer to the opening instead. Volunteer Kassandra scaled the brick wall behind the garages and used a long tree branch to encourage the pup towards the exit.
Once the puppy was within reach, Hall expertly maneuvered a snappy snare leash into the crevice and slipped it around his neck. With great care, she pulled him out and celebrated the successful conclusion of the challenging rescue.
Hall placed the dog in her van and drove to Camino Pet Hospital. During the journey, the pup took a well-deserved nap in front of the air conditioning vent, and Hall decided on the perfect name for him.
βWe named him Casper because he was like a friendly ghost hiding in the walls, and heβs white,β Hall explained.
Casper soon arrived at the vet, where he received a comprehensive checkup and a rejuvenating spa treatment. Later that day, he fell asleep with a fresh haircut and a new outlook on lifeβand heβs been thriving ever since.
βHeβs doing so well,β Hall said. βWhen I first got him, he was so frightened. But now heβs rolling over for belly rubs and craving affection. Heβs just incredibly sweet.β
Casper is set to join a foster family this week, but he is still in search of his forever home. With his charming personality and the serendipity of being discovered by attentive neighbors, Hall is confident that the right family will find him soon.
βHeβs definitely a little miracle, just hiding behind that wall,β Hall said. βHeβs so fortunate that someone noticed him.β
