They meet up almost every day.
While most dogs socialize with a mix of humans and fellow canines, Lili, a 3-year-old pup living on the French Polynesian atoll of Fakarava, has a rather unusual circle of friends. Sheβs got a preference for those with gills and fins, and her very best friend is a shark.
Since Emmanuelle Larchet adopted Lili, sheβs been aware of her dog’s fascination with aquatic life. Lili began swimming in the lagoon by Larchetβs home when she was just a month old.
βSheβs truly a water dog,β Larchet shared.
The lagoon near Larchetβs house is home to around 100 sharks, and when Lili takes her swims, sheβs surrounded by them. While many dog owners might be apprehensive about their pet mingling with sharks, Larchet knows that these are nurse sharks, which are surprisingly gentle.
βWe affectionately call them sea puppies because theyβre like dogs themselves β¦ very friendly,β Larchet explained.
Larchet humorously notes that when Lili swims with her shark pals, itβs like a meeting between sea puppies and earth puppies.
Over the years that Lili has been swimming in the lagoon, thereβs one shark sheβs developed a special bond with. His name is Sharky, and he and Lili meet up almost daily. Larchet and Lili can easily identify Sharky thanks to a distinctive marking on one of his fins.
Lili and Sharky enjoy exploring the lagoon together, reveling in the warm, crystal-clear water. βHe comes to say hello every time she sees him,β Larchet noted.
Although Lili and Larchet share a close friendship, Larchet is delighted to share Lili with Sharky. Watching Lili interact with her shark friends never ceases to bring joy to Larchet.
βSeeing her swim with Sharky always makes me so happy,β Larchet said.
