“My heart absolutely broke.”

Earlier this month in Lamar County, Mississippi, Uber driver Kaytleen Roberson was transporting a passenger when something on the roadside caught her eye—a desperate, pleading face inside a small crate. Roberson and her passenger didn’t hesitate. They pulled over and found a helpless puppy, clearly abandoned and alone.

“I immediately felt sad,” Roberson told WDAM 7. “I just wanted to get her help.”

Roberson snapped a photo of the pup and posted it on Facebook, hoping a rescue organization might step in. The post reached Tamara Huff, director of the Hub City Humane Society, who was deeply moved.

“My heart absolutely broke,” Huff told The Dodo. “I responded right away: ‘That baby can come to Hub City.’”

Now safe at the shelter and named Rocky Road, the puppy began the long process of healing.

“Initially, Rocky Road was very fearful and untrusting,” Huff said. “She trembled constantly and would cower at the back of her wire kennel whenever staff approached.”

But with patience—and plenty of treats—Rocky Road slowly began to trust her caretakers. Just one week later, the transformation was astounding.

“She is such a character!” Huff said. “She’s full of expression, stomps around playfully, and absolutely adores attention. She loves her toys and is happiest curled up in a lap.”

Rocky Road is still waiting to meet her forever family, but shelter staff are confident it won’t be long.

“Her future looks bright and happy,” Huff said.
