Three donkeys, Ash, Yvonne, and Roney, have found a new forever home through the Rehoming Scheme, bringing companionship to Daisy, a donkey grieving the loss of her daughter.

Daisy, who lives in the Scottish countryside with her owners Tony and Jane, tragically lost her five-year-old daughter Blossom to severe colic. Recognizing Daisy’s loneliness, Tony and Jane sought a companion for her and turned to the sanctuary for help.

Having been familiar with the Rehoming Scheme for years and as former adopters, the couple connected with Donkey Welfare Adviser Adele Crompton, who visited their home near Aberdeen. During the visit, Adele confirmed their property could accommodate multiple donkeys. With just a few adjustments, plans were made for Ash, Yvonne, and Roney to join Daisy.

Initially unsure of the newcomers, Daisy soon began bonding with them. Today, the four donkeys share a strong connection. Jane, who is retired, spends the most time with the donkeys, while Tony balances work and caring for them. Their three-year-old grandson is also delighted by the growing herd.

Tony shared, โ€œWatching them play together for the first time was magical. Evenings spent sitting with them while they approach on their own terms are incredibly special. The sanctuaryโ€™s support has been outstandingโ€”Adele and Nicola are always available and incredibly professional and empathetic.โ€

As the donkeys settled, their unique personalities began to emerge. Roney, a gelding, loves attention, while Yvonne is more independent. Ash, described as gentle and laid-back, is gradually asserting herself. Meanwhile, Daisy is known for her independent streakโ€”except when carrots are involved!

The donkeysโ€™ daily routine includes morning hay, mucking out, and time in the field when the weather permits, with moveable fencing to prevent overgrazing. Grooming and hoof care are part of their evening ritual, and their diet is supplemented with hedgerow forage like gorse and willow. Enrichment activities with treat balls, rope toys, and logs keep them entertained.

Tony and Janeโ€™s farmstead also houses Millie, a rescue dog, and seven sheep in a separate enclosure. The donkeysโ€™ field draws the attention of curious passers-by, adding to the idyllic countryside scene.

Adele noted, โ€œAsh, Yvonne, and Roney have truly landed on their hooves, forming a lasting friendship with Daisy under the exceptional care of Tony and Jane, who clearly cherish their donkey family.โ€

For Tony and Jane, these donkeys have brought joy, companionship, and cherished moments, turning their evenings into what they describe as โ€œquality time for all.โ€
