The other day, a sweet calico cat arrived at Palm Springs Animal Shelter alongside five tiny kittens. Since the adult cat looked almost identical to the babies, staff naturally assumed she was their mother.

But during a standard health check, the team noticed something unusual. The adult cat showed no physical signs of nursing, meaning she hadn’t recently given birth.

β€œWe realized, β€˜Oh my gosh β€” she’s not the mom,’” Gina Mainwal, the shelter’s marketing manager, told The Dodo.

The discovery left everyone puzzled. If she wasn’t their mother, why was she caring for them so attentively? After looking more closely, staff formed a heartwarming theory: because the cats resembled one another so closely, the adult cat was likely their older sister from a previous litter who had stepped in to help.

In the past, the shelter had seen mother cats adopt orphaned kittens and raise them as their own. But they’d never encountered a sibling taking on that role.

β€œWe’ve seen somewhat similar situations before,” Mainwal said, β€œbut nothing quite like this.”

The shelter later posted a video of the devoted big sister β€” named Muffins β€” cuddling and tending to the kittens on Instagram. Viewers were deeply touched by her nurturing behavior.

β€œShe’s not a stepmom β€” she’s the mom who stepped up,” one commenter wrote.

It didn’t take long for someone to fall in love with Muffins. After seeing her story online, an adopter drove from Los Angeles to Palm Springs to give her a forever home. Staff described Muffins as affectionate, friendly and wonderful with people β€” a cat who quickly wins everyone over.

Meanwhile, the five kittens β€” Donut, Croissant, Loaf, Danish and Cannoli β€” are flourishing.

Still mostly bottle-fed, the little ones are growing bigger and more playful each day. The shelter affectionately calls them the β€œbakery litter.”

Once they reach about eight weeks old and are spayed or neutered, they’ll be ready to find homes of their own. The shelter encourages adopters to consider taking kittens in pairs β€” and with personalities this sweet, it’s only a matter of time before each of them finds a loving family.
