Despite the often sluggish pace of rush hour traffic, it’s not every day that the world’s slowest animal is spotted behind the wheel. However, in Brazil, 73-year-old Antônio Luiz Laghi had just such an encounter.

On his way to a doctor’s appointment in Manaus, Laghi opened his car door, only to find an unexpected passenger: a wild sloth. Laghi’s son, Bruno, shared that his father had left the car window open the night before to cool off, unaware that it might invite a local, slow-moving visitor looking for a cozy spot.

Luckily, Laghi’s home is near a large jungle area. With the help of the building’s doorman, they were able to carefully return the sloth back to its natural habitat. Sloths typically spend their time high up in the trees, but they occasionally descend for various reasons, like searching for food, companionship, or even for bathroom breaks. Why this particular sloth chose Laghi’s car as a rest stop is a mystery, but for Laghi’s sake, let’s hope it wasn’t for the latter reason.
