She was β€œextremely scared and trembling.”

In Patillas, Puerto Rico, animal rescuer Yesenia Pacheco Morales spends every day caring for stray dogs who rely on her for food, shelter, and kindness. Among them was a sweet, loyal dog named Chantal, who never missed a meal and always greeted Morales with a wagging tail.

Then one day, Chantal disappeared. Morales searched for her along the usual routes, growing more worried with each passing day. When Chantal finally reappeared, Morales could hardly believe her eyes β€” the gentle dog was trembling, her fur matted with sticky, brightly colored paint. Someone had intentionally covered her in toxic paint, leaving her terrified and in pain.

β€œI felt so much sadness and anger,” Morales said. β€œI started to cry. I had so many questions.”

The paint had hardened on Chantal’s coat and irritated her skin, causing red, scaly rashes. Morales and her team immediately bathed her, trimmed her fur, and treated her with antibiotics and antihistamines. They gently massaged her skin with moisturizer to ease her discomfort.

A volunteer offered to foster Chantal so she could rest and heal in safety. Gradually, her spirit returned. She began wagging her tail again, exploring her surroundings, and playing with other dogs β€” finally rediscovering the joy she once knew.

Then, the best news arrived: a family in Pennsylvania had seen Chantal’s story online and wanted to adopt her. They were also adopting another Puerto Rican dog, ensuring Chantal would have a friend from home in her new life.

After everything she endured, Chantal’s story has a happy ending β€” one filled with hope, healing, and love. She’s finally safe, cherished, and free to leave her painful past behind.
