“I turned around, and here he comes walking back up the driveway with …”
When Meagan King looked out onto her covered porch one day, she did a double take. A skinny dog was sitting there, staring back at her — and she had no idea who he was. She figured he must belong to someone and would eventually wander home. But the next morning, he was still there.
When Meagan came home from work and saw the pup still waiting outside, she knew she and her family had to step in.
“I realized this dog was pretty emaciated and needed our help,” King said in a video for The Dodo.
She asked around, double- and triple-checking to make sure he didn’t have an owner. Once she confirmed he was a stray, she made the decision to adopt him.
“He then really started showing us his goofy side, his playful side,” King said.
The family named the pup Roman and quickly fell head over heels in love with him. He became a cherished member of the family — and before long, he decided to pay it forward.
“One day, I turned around, and here he comes walking up the driveway with a little kitten,” King said.
No one knew where Roman had found the kitten, but it was clear she needed help, just like he once had. Roman had learned kindness from his new family and instinctively knew they’d welcome the kitten just like they’d welcomed him.
At first, King wasn’t sure they could keep the kitten — but, just like with Roman, they couldn’t resist. They brought her inside and decided to let her come and go as she pleased. Most of the time, though, she just wanted to hang out with Roman, her new best friend.
Once a stray dog struggling to survive, Roman had found the perfect home — and he was more than happy to share it with anyone else who needed love.
