The State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report, released by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), shows a concerning decline in rural UK hedgehog populations, which have dropped by 30-75% since 2000.

In response, we took action to identify primary threats, understand how they’re interconnected, and explore effective solutions.

Together with BHPS and over 30 conservation NGOs, scientists, academic partners, hedgehog rehabilitators, and key players in transport and farming, we collaborated on a national plan for urgently needed changes.

The result is the first-ever National Hedgehog Conservation Strategy, which maps out research-based approaches to tackle threats like habitat loss and the decline in natural invertebrate prey.

As new research emerges, the strategy will adapt to further strengthen conservation, offering a collaborative framework for policymakers, conservationists, landowners, and communities to ensure a common approach to hedgehog protection.

Coordinated efforts across national, regional, and local levels are essential to restore this beloved species to our landscapes. This strategy also complements the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme, launched by PTES and BHPS earlier this year to track population trends nationwide.

Encouragingly, the 2022 report indicates that while rural hedgehogs face decline, urban hedgehogs may be stabilizing, likely due to efforts from dedicated Hedgehog Champions and public support in making gardens hedgehog-friendly.

While this urban trend is positive, similar progress is urgently needed in rural areas.

Helping Hedgehogs at Home

There are many ways you can support hedgehogs, especially with hibernation season approaching.

For garden owners, creating 13cm x 13cm square gaps, or Hedgehog Highways, in garden fences allows these nocturnal creatures to travel safely between green spaces for food and shelter.

Beyond this, consider adding wild patches, water sources, and cozy nesting spots like log piles, leaf piles, or a hedgehog house.

Before lighting bonfires or mowing, check for hedgehogs to keep them safe during their active season.

No Garden? Here’s How You Can Help!

Contact local councils and developers to emphasize the importance of managing public spaces for hedgehogs, advocating for hedgehog-friendly designs in new builds.

You can also spread awareness by sharing PTES and BHPS guidance or speaking with friends, family, and neighbors about ways to make a difference for hedgehogs.
