“She’s the best dog ever” ❤️
Walking down a dusty street in rural Mexico, a heavily pregnant pit bull named Poppy searched for a safe place to have her puppies. Just days away from giving birth, she risked delivering her litter on the harsh streets—until a kind couple, Jackie and Carly, came to her rescue.
The moment Jackie and Carly spotted Poppy, they knew they had to help.
“She was standing there on the sidewalk, hugely pregnant,” Jackie told The Dodo in 2022. “You could tell she was definitely skittish.”
The pair set out a tray of food to gently coax Poppy closer. Soon enough, the timid street dog was leaning into their arms—especially Carly’s.
“Poppy and Carly immediately had a bond,” Jackie said.
They carefully led Poppy to their car and drove her to the vet, where she stayed for two days to receive a flea bath and treatment. The veterinary staff showered her with love, and Jackie and Carly visited daily to remind Poppy she wasn’t alone.
“We went and saw her every day, and then we brought her home,” Carly said.
On the day Poppy was released, the grateful dog couldn’t hide her affection. In the car, she hooked her paw around Jackie’s arm, leaned into her with a contented smile, and looked up at Carly for more pets.
“You want me to hold you, too?” Carly asked. “OK, both of us. There you go. Is that better?”
Once home, Poppy quickly settled in.
“She just kind of came in the house, jumped on the couch, and lay down,” Carly said.
For days, Poppy spent most of her time sleeping and cuddling with her rescuers. Then one night, around 11 p.m., she began to stir. Jackie and Carly soon realized she was in labor and spent the next five hours helping her bring nine healthy puppies into the world.
“I had never delivered puppies before,” Jackie admitted. “They just kept coming.”
Though the delivery was stressful, the couple was overjoyed with the outcome. That night, they noticed Poppy was just as affectionate with her newborns as she had been with them.
“It’s so sweet—she hugs and holds them,” Carly said. “She’s amazing.”
Having nine lively puppies in the house brought even more joy and excitement. Poppy proved to be a devoted mother, caring for her babies around the clock, while Jackie and Carly delighted in playing with the energetic pups.
“They have made my days a lot happier,” Jackie said. “It can’t get any better than that.”
A few months later, when the puppies were old enough to be independent, Jackie and Carly began finding them loving forever homes. Each puppy found a family—except one.
“Well, we figured you probably legally established residency at this point, so we’re just going to go ahead and adopt you,” Jackie told Poppy. “Is that OK?”
Poppy was thrilled with the decision and has been living happily with Carly and Jackie ever since. With the puppies thriving in their new homes, the couple now focuses all their love on Poppy—who has changed their lives forever.
“She’s the best dog ever,” Carly said. “She really is.”
