β€œHe has been living a nightmare …”

A Stray Dog Arrives at The Animal Foundation

Last fall, a stray dog appeared at The Animal Foundation (TAF), immediately capturing the attention of the shelter staff. His square brown muzzle and chocolate eyes hinted at a pit bull, but his protruding ribs and hollow temples revealed a harsher reality.

The dog, later named Chappo, weighed just 21 poundsβ€”less than half the weight of a healthy dog his size. Staff described him as one of the most emaciated dogs they had ever seen.

Critical Condition and Immediate Care

Chappo’s malnutrition affected more than just his weight. He had hair loss around his ears, sore hips, and barely any energy for simple tasks.

β€œWhen he arrived, he was so weak, he couldn’t even lift himself onto the bed in his kennel,” TAF wrote.

The shelter staff immediately started him on a strict refeeding plan, carefully helping him gain weight safely. Alongside nutrition, they showered him with affection to help rebuild his trust in humans.

A Loving Pup Emerges

Despite his condition, Chappo remained affectionate and craved love. β€œHe’s got the most adorable puppy eyes, and he leans in for gentle pets,” TAF said.

By the end of October, Chappo had gained 12 pounds. He started moving around more, showing a sparkle in his eyes, and spreading joy with kisses to staff.

Community Support and Progress

The community and TAF staff rallied behind Chappo as he continued gaining weight throughout November. By December, he had reached a healthy weight, and the team knew he was ready for adoption.

Chappo’s Happy Ending

Soon after, Chappo found his forever home. He now goes by Gumbo and enjoys life as a healthy, energetic, and playful dog. His days as an emaciated stray are behind him, replaced with toys, treats, and love from his new family.

β€œHe’s playful, smart, energetic, and living his absolute best life,” TAF wrote. β€œWe couldn’t be happier.”
