“He just started flying …”

Deaf Dog Satchi Saved From Euthanasia Finds His Wings in a New Home

After volunteering with a pup named Satchi for more than eight months, Dharma Lorenz received a heartbreaking call: Satchi had only 24 hours left. The overcrowded shelter where he lived had placed him on the euthanasia list.

Instead of letting his life end there, Lorenz rushed to save him.

A Last-Minute Rescue

β€œI raced out of work to get him,” Lorenz said in a video for The Dodo.

In the car on the way home, Satchi was scared and confused. But as soon as he realized he was finally safe, everything changed. He began running around and leaping with joy, as though he were flying.

That first night, Satchi curled up and fell asleep with what Lorenz described as the β€œbiggest smile on his face.”

β€œDeaf dogs, especially Satchi, unless they feel really safe, they do not go to sleep easily,” Lorenz explained. β€œWhen they feel safe like that, and you can watch that, I mean, selfishly, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

Finding His Place in a Deaf Dog Pack

Satchi is deaf, and Lorenz already had several other deaf rescue dogs at home. The bond was instant.

β€œThey definitely understand each other to another degree,” Lorenz said.

Satchi quickly fit right in with the pack, as if he had always belonged.

A Dog Who Loves to Fly

Now, Satchi expresses his happiness in the most joyful way: by β€œflying.” He leaps across the beach, through the house, and anywhere else he can β€” always with an unstoppable smile.

β€œNo matter how much he flies, it always brings a smile to our faces,” Lorenz said.

A Second Chance at Life

Thanks to Lorenz’s compassion, Satchi’s story is no longer one of loss, but of hope. Saved just in time, he now lives a life full of love, companionship, and freedom β€” a reminder of how powerful rescue can be.
