An animal shelter is appealing to reptile lovers to help find new homes for six snakes currently in its care β including Ivy, a ball python who has spent almost a year waiting for adoption.
The Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) said it was seeking adopters for several species, such as corn snakes, ball pythons, a Texas rat snake, and a Nicaraguan dwarf boa.
According to the shelter, corn snakes are calm and easy to handle, making them ideal pets for beginners. However, staff said snakes often stay at the shelter for extended periods before finding homes.
βCorn snakes are actually very gentle and simple to care for,β said animal carer Nina Powell. βTheyβre lovely pets, but they tend to be overlooked, so we often have them with us for quite some time.β
One of the shelterβs long-term residents is Hades, another ball python. The JSPCA described her as a calm and friendly snake who could make a great companion for families with older children, provided sheβs introduced carefully.
Ivy, meanwhile, is a βshy but sweetβ python who enjoys relaxing under her heat lamp and quietly observing her surroundings.
For more experienced reptile keepers, the team recommends Noodle β an eye-catching Texas rat snake known for its striking appearance and active nature.
The shelter reminded potential adopters that snakes need secure vivariums equipped with proper heating, humidity control, and UV lighting. The team also provides advice on diet, substrates, and enclosure setup, and suggests using second-hand equipment to help manage costs.
βTheyβre very low-maintenance pets,β Ms. Powell added. βYou donβt have to walk them or groom them β and theyβre absolutely fascinating to watch.β
