“It felt almost magical.” One evening, as Nipuna Wanigasinghe was driving home from work near his residence outside of Melbourne, Australia, something peculiar caught his eye. It was unlike anything he had ever seen before.
“I spotted an unusual little fellow on the sidewalk,” Wanigasinghe recounted to The Dodo. “She didn’t move, just stared at the passing cars.”
Intrigued by the mysterious figure, its pale fur almost appearing to emit a faint glow in the dimly lit night, Wanigasinghe gently applied the brakes to take a closer look. As he drew nearer, he identified the animal as a young brushtail possum, a species indigenous to the region. However, this particular possum boasted a coloration unlike any Wanigasinghe had ever encountered.
“I’ve never seen one like that,” remarked Wanigasinghe.
After capturing a couple of brief videos of the possum, Wanigasinghe pocketed his phone and removed his sweater. Carefully, he used it to scoop up the possum, lifting her gently and placing her on a nearby tree branch away from the road, ensuring her safety.
