“Once a hero, always a hero.”
Even in retirement, 12-year-old German shepherd Bear proves he’s still a hero. Once a Sussex Police dog, Bear now enjoys a laid-back life, lounging on couches and beds. But when duty calls, his instincts kick in—even on his birthday.
On a chilly November evening, Bear was out for his first long walk since undergoing surgery. Accompanied by his mom, Julia Pope, a former police officer, Bear suddenly stopped and began signaling something was wrong. He dragged Pope into dense undergrowth, where they found a vulnerable man who had fallen, was disoriented, and too weak to get up.
“This was supposed to be a gentle walk,” Pope said, “but Bear alerted us to this man, who was wet, cold, and likely wouldn’t have survived the night.”
Bear guided Pope and others to safety, reuniting the man with his grateful family.
From Police Dog to Wellbeing Volunteer
Bear’s heroics didn’t end with his retirement. He now volunteers as a wellbeing dog, visiting police stations after traumatic events to comfort officers and staff. His empathetic nature shines through as he senses when people are struggling.
“He’ll badger staff to play with him,” Pope said, “but he’s also incredibly perceptive. Once, he ignored everyone else in a crowded department and went straight to comfort someone grieving the loss of her dog.”

Years of rigorous police work have left Bear with some health challenges, but the Thin Blue Paw Foundation ensures he stays active and healthy. This UK charity supports retired police dogs, providing them with rehabilitation and care.
Bear’s latest rescue has only added to his legacy as a community hero. His reward? Extra treats, playtime, and the pride of everyone who knows him.
“He’s a really special dog,” Pope said. “We’re very proud of him.”
