“Look at that face, he’s the cutest little old man you’ve ever seen,” remarked rescuer Jenny Leech, accustomed to receiving calls about elderly pups in need of caring homes. Her own pack of senior and special needs dogs continually expands, but the story of a senior Chihuahua in a Bellwood, Illinois shelter struck her like never before.
“Found as a stray on a bustling road during a bitterly cold winter week…” Leech detailed on Facebook.
After plucking the 14-year-old pup from the streets, shelter staff settled him into a kennel, hopeful for a reunion with his family. Yet, as days elapsed, hope dwindled with no one stepping forward.
Dubbed Chester, the senior pooch retreated to the corner of his enclosure, spending most of his days curled up with his back to the door. He yearned for a family and a warm abode, but despair began to overshadow his dreams.
Quiet and withdrawn, Chester remained in his kennel, uncertain of what lay ahead. Then, a glimmer of hope emerged when B.A.A.R.K. Dog Rescue learned of the dejected shelter resident and vowed to change his fate. Teaming up with Leech, a trusted foster, they arranged a temporary refuge for Chester.
Leech quickly welcomed Chester into her home, where her loving pack of senior dogs eagerly awaited their new sibling. Despite his unique qualities, Chester seamlessly blended in with the crew.
“He’s got a few lumps and bumps, long nails, and is a bit off on the seeing and hearing,” Leech shared on Facebook. “After a bath, he effortlessly joined the ‘Chi Mafia’ and is strutting around with the big guys like he owns the place.”
Following his placement in foster care, Chester underwent a thorough medical assessment revealing a severe heart murmur and a set of decayed teeth. Despite his health challenges, Chester was surrounded by a community of caregivers who adored him unconditionally.
“[He’s] the cutest little old man with the stinkiest breath ever,” Leech affectionately penned on Facebook, capturing Chester’s endearing essence despite his medical issues.
Shortly after, Chester underwent an extensive dental cleaning and commenced treatment for his heart condition. Leech’s aspiration was to secure him a peaceful forever home, and there were interested adopters on the horizon. However, Chester’s journey took a heartbreaking turn when he fell ill once more before his new chapter could unfold.
Emergency tests unveiled a concurrent kidney infection, with symptoms exacerbating rapidly. Though doctors managed to stabilize Chester, his foster mom found herself confronted with a difficult decision regarding his future.
Despite her heartfelt desire to witness Chester thrive in his own home, Leech swiftly recognized that his well-being lay in remaining with her. Drawing upon her extensive expertise in nurturing sick senior dogs, Leech was determined to provide Chester with the utmost care and the most fulfilling days of his life.
“Tonight, he showed us he’s happy to be here by hanging with the crew, begging in the kitchen, and enjoying a good dinner…” Leech shared on Facebook. “It may not be the fairy-tale ending we envisioned for him, but we are privileged to be his forever family.”
Though keeping Chester wasn’t initially part of their blueprint, the Leeches relish every moment spent with the resilient little fellow. They vigilantly monitor his progress daily, adhere to his treatment regimen, and shower him with unwavering affection throughout his journey.
From a despondent shelter dog to a cherished member of a sprawling family, Chester now basks in the warmth of a loving home for the remainder of his days. For a pup who once teetered on the brink of hopelessness, he couldn’t envision a more perfect arrangement.
