“[S]he was completely shut down” 🥺
Last week, Suzette Hall received the kind of call she never hesitates to answer. A tiny brown dog had been spotted hiding in a patch of bushes, sitting motionless as cars and people passed by.
“[T]his sweet girl sat in bushes for an entire day,” Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, wrote on Facebook. “Frozen. Terrified.”
Hall jumped in her car — but quickly found herself stuck in heavy traffic. Knowing time mattered, she called her friend and fellow rescuer, Kristina Ross, for backup.
Ross rushed to the scene. When she arrived, her heart sank.
The little dog hadn’t moved.
“There she was. Still sitting in those bushes. Still so scared,” Hall later wrote.
A Gentle Rescue
With patience, soft words and a few tempting treats, Ross slowly gained the trembling dog’s trust. Within minutes, she was able to carefully lift her up and place her safely in the car.
The pup was taken straight to Camino Pet Hospital, where staff checked for injuries and scanned for a microchip. There was none.
Still, something about her behavior suggested she wasn’t a stray.
“She was completely shut down,” Hall wrote. “You could just tell she was missing her family so much.”
Hall and Ross posted her photos everywhere — social media, community pages, lost pet groups.
Days passed. No one came forward.
Hope began to fade.
A Familiar Face on a Flyer
Then Ross spotted something that made her pause — a lost dog flyer in the neighborhood featuring a pup who looked identical to the one they’d rescued.
She immediately messaged Hall.
“[Kristina] said, ‘I think I found her owners,’” Hall recalled.
The number on the flyer led to a family who had been desperately searching for their missing dog, Lionela. She had vanished not far from where the frightened brown dog had been found.
When the family arrived at the hospital, everything became clear.
At first, Lionela seemed unsure. It had been weeks. But then recognition set in — and joy followed.
“Pure joy,” Hall wrote.
Back Where She Belongs
Once home, Lionela’s happiness was undeniable. The timid, shut-down dog from the bushes transformed back into a beloved family companion.
She’ll soon be microchipped to prevent another scare like this one.
For Hall, moments like Lionela’s reunion are what keep her going.
“This right here … this is the kind of stuff that makes me so happy,” she wrote.
And for one once-frozen little dog, the bushes are now just a distant memory — replaced by the safety of home.
