β€œOnce his snack turned into a helmet, he needed a helping hand” 😰

There’s hardly a creature on Earth who can resist the allure of an open peanut butter jar β€” not even a curious raccoon.

Over the weekend in Barnstable, Massachusetts, one particularly hungry raccoon stumbled upon the jackpot: an almost-empty jar of peanut butter. He dove right in, licking every last salty-sweet smear from the bottom like a true snack connoisseur.

But then came the twist.

What started as a delicious treasure hunt quickly turned into a sticky predicament. The jar, now wedged tightly around his head, refused to let go. The raccoon panicked, flailing and thrashing β€” a peanut butter bandit caught in the act.

β€œOnce his snack turned into a helmet, he needed a helping hand,” the Cape Wildlife Center (CWC) shared on Facebook.

Luckily, help came quickly. A Good Samaritan spotted the distressed raccoon and called Barnstable Animal Control (BAC), who rushed the little guy to the expert hands of the CWC team. Time was of the essence.

β€œOur veterinary team was able to safely remove the jar and free our furry friend β€” jar intact, pride slightly bruised, and peanut butter cravings definitely satisfied,” CWC wrote.

Once freed, the raccoon was given a full health check and some rehydrating fluids. Miraculously, he was in great shape β€” just a bit rattled (and possibly rethinking his snacking strategy). The team then returned him to the exact spot where his adventure began and watched him waddle off into the trees, jar-free and snack-savvy.

β€œHe waddled off safe and sound, probably thinking twice about his next snack mission,” the center joked.

While this peanut butter escapade ended happily, CWC issued a reminder to the public: secure your trash and recycling. Unwashed jars can become deadly traps for curious wildlife.

As for their slippery little patient?

β€œ[He’s a] little peanut butter bandit!” the team wrote β€” a title he certainly earned, along with a story that no raccoon in the neighborhood is likely to forget.
