“[S]he wants to live …”
It was in the middle of October 2022 when Takis, the devoted rescuer behind Takis Shelter in Crete, received a call that instantly stopped him in his tracks. For years, he had been saving stray dogs in and around Ierapetra, but this particular plea from three kindhearted locals felt especially urgent.
They had discovered a pale, fragile dog curled up in the bushes in a remote, empty area — a place so isolated it seemed she had been battling hunger, fear and loneliness completely on her own for a very long time.
The moment Takis arrived, the sight before him was heartbreaking. The dog was painfully thin, little more than skin and bones, and so weak that it looked as if she had almost surrendered to exhaustion.
Still, despite everything she had endured, there was a quiet gentleness in her. Takis, experienced in helping frightened strays, knew that trust often takes patience. But this sweet dog seemed to sense that help had finally come. As he knelt near the bushes and offered her some food, she carefully stretched out her neck and accepted it with surprising calm. Encouraged, he offered her another bite and gently slipped a leash around her neck, hoping to guide her to safety.
But it quickly became clear that she was far too weak to walk. Her body simply could not carry her anymore. So Takis lifted her into his arms and carried her to the car himself, softly assuring her that her suffering was finally coming to an end.
That night at Takis Shelter, the exhausted pup was given something she may not have felt in months: warmth, safety and a bed of her own. She was given the name Nala, and surrounded by other rescued dogs, she drifted into what was likely one of the first truly peaceful sleeps she had had in a very long time.

The following day brought new answers, though not easy ones. At the veterinary clinic, Nala underwent a full examination, and the results revealed just how much she had been carrying. She was suffering from pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection, as well as diabetes.
Her condition was critical, and emergency surgery became her only chance. Those caring for her feared she might not survive the operation, but Nala had already shown that she was stronger than she looked. Against the odds, she made it through the four-hour procedure safely.
Although the surgery eased one part of her pain, the road ahead remained long. Nala needed careful treatment, a special diet and a closely managed feeding plan to help her regain weight without worsening her diabetes. She also had to endure regular insulin injections. Yet through it all, she kept going. Meal by meal, day by day, she chose to fight for the life that had nearly slipped away.

Slowly, Nala began to change. The frail dog who had once hidden in silence started growing stronger. Her body filled out, her spirit returned, and her sadness gave way to comfort and trust. In time, she blossomed into a happy, healthy dog — no longer just surviving, but truly living.
Today, Nala is cherished like royalty. She has her own space, her own comfort, and a life filled with the love she always deserved. More than three years after her rescue, she remains one of the many dogs at Takis Shelter, yet her story continues to shine brightly.

For Takis, Nala will always hold a special place in his heart. From fearing she would not survive her first nights to watching her thrive years later, her journey is a powerful reminder that hope can appear even in the darkest moments.
Sometimes, miracles really do happen.
