Earlier this month, a Virginia homeowner glanced at their pool and noticed a curious feathered shape floating on the surface. Alarmed, they hurried over and discovered it was a small eastern screech owl who had accidentally fallen into the water. Recognizing the need for expert help, the homeowner reached out to Blue Ridge Wildlife Center.
The Blue Ridge team was relieved the homeowner sought professional assistance.
โWe are a licensed wildlife hospital,โ explained Dr. Jen Riley, the centerโs director, in an interview with The Dodo. โThis kind of care should be handled by licensed professionals.โ

Although the center had previously rescued various animals from poolsโprimarily bats and amphibiansโthey had never encountered an owl in such a predicament. Once removed from the pool’s harsh chemicals, the owl was placed on a towel at the center. The little bird, still damp from chlorine, squinted uncomfortably with wide eyes.
The rescuers provided fluids, warmth, and checked the owlโs feathers for waterproofing. Gradually, the owlโs eyes brightened and his feathers regained their vibrant sheen. He looked revitalized, alert, and healthy.
The team was overjoyed with the transformation.
