Rare Asiatic Lions Sonika and Sahee Make Their Debut at Hertfordshire Zoo

In an exciting development at Hertfordshire Zoo (formerly Paradise Wildlife Park), the public has been introduced to a pair of Asiatic lions: Sonika and Sahee. These majestic lions, now settled into their new India-themed enclosure, are a welcome addition to the zoo, which rebranded just a year ago.

The enclosure was designed to reflect the lions’ native habitat, complete with elevated lookout spots, dense foliage, and vibrant TukTuks that pay homage to their Indian heritage. This thoughtful design helps mimic the natural environment of the lions, offering them a comfortable and enriching space to thrive.

The Asiatic lion is critically endangered, with only about 600 individuals left in the wild. The arrival of Sonika and Sahee marks a significant milestone for the zoo, which is committed to animal conservation and welfare.

James Cork, head keeper at the zoo, shared the excitement of the zoo’s growth, stating, “Since becoming Hertfordshire Zoo a year ago, we have welcomed over 50 new animals to the county.” This growth reflects the zoo’s dedication to improving animal care and expanding its conservation efforts.

Peter Sampson, the original owner of the site who purchased the zoo in 1984, was instrumental in the zoo’s transformation. Under new management, led by Tyler Whitnall, Hertfordshire Zoo has been recognized as one of the best zoos in Europe. Whitnall emphasized the importance of the zoo’s rebranding, stating, β€œIt’s a real pleasure to introduce Asiatic Lions, Sonika and Sahee to the public on such an important anniversary. Rebranding as Hertfordshire Zoo marked an era of real growth for us.”

With the introduction of Sonika and Sahee, the zoo continues its mission to raise awareness of endangered species and provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the incredible biodiversity of our world.
