“One wrong move would have meant the difference between life and death.β
Just a few days ago, Long Island animal rescuer John Debacker was suddenly flooded with calls, messages, and Facebook alerts. All signs pointed to the same urgent situation β a cat was reportedly trapped beneath a nearby trash compactor, and immediate help was needed.
βI didnβt hesitate. I knew every second counted,β Debacker shared with The Dodo.

The trash compactor was positioned dangerously close to fast-moving traffic, with just a narrow sidewalk in between. Huddled beneath the heavy machine was a terrified stray cat β but not just any stray. This one was a rare Scottish Fold, easily recognized by his unique folded ears and gentle appearance.
Debacker understood the gravity of the situation. One wrong move could send the cat bolting into oncoming traffic.
βMy heart dropped,β he said. βIt was a moment where precision and calm were everything.β

Acting with care and experience, Debacker enticed the frightened feline with food. When the timing was right, he reached in and gently scruffed the cat, lifting him out of harmβs way.
βThe moment I had him in my hands, I felt such relief,β he recalled. βIt took patience, but we got him.β
After the rescue, Debacker placed the cat in the care of an experienced foster. Though understandably skittish at first, the Scottish Fold soon began to relax in his new surroundings.
βHe started off shy, but heβs turned into a calm, affectionate little guy,β Debacker said.
Now under veterinary supervision and receiving regular meals, the once-homeless cat is finally on the mend. While his past remains a mystery, his future is filled with comfort, care, and the love of a dedicated foster home.
One thingβs certain: this rare beauty will never have to face the streets again.
