βSheβs just happy to be the center of attention” π
Eight years ago, a 10-day-old baby raccoon became separated from her family. When an animal control officer informed Susan Spearman about the abandoned little raccoon, she felt compelled to help.
Spearman did extensive research on raccoon care and immediately began providing the nurturing care the baby needed. It quickly became clear that, because the raccoon had been separated from her mother so young, she wouldnβt survive in the wild. So, Spearman named her Biscuits and welcomed her into her home.
As Biscuits grew, she became an integral part of the Spearman family, even sleeping in their bed. In fact, Spearmanβs husband Hugh has to race her to bed each nightβotherwise, Biscuits will take his spot. βSometimes, sheβs already there when weβre getting ready for bed,β Spearman shared.
Biscuits has grown so comfortable in her new home that sheβs become quite the troublemaker. Every day, she comes up with new ways to stir up chaos.
She enjoys opening the fridge to steal her favorite snacks, climbing anything she can, and rifling through cabinets. But her favorite mischievous activity is climbing up drawers and making nests in them. Sheβs not particularβwhether itβs kitchen, bathroom, or dresser drawers, sheβll climb them all.
Biscuits has even developed her own method for drawer climbing. She climbs into a drawer, opens the one above, climbs into that, and repeats the process. βItβs a daily occurrence,β Spearman explained.
Despite her antics, the Spearman family adores Biscuits for her playful nature. βWe have two children, and Biscuits is our favorite,β Spearman joked.
However, Spearman emphasizes that while raccoons may seem cute and similar to pets, caring for one is no small task. βRaccoons require a lot of responsibility and commitment,β she writes in her Raccoon Care Guide. βThey need time, attention, and resources. If you find a baby raccoon, itβs best to contact a local rehabber or the Department of Natural Resources for help.β
As for Biscuits, sheβs thriving in a family that loves her and embraces her mischievous spirit. βShe just loves being the center of attention,β Spearman said.
